When it comes to Garfield and Odie, we often think of Garfield as the star of the show, while Odie is just seen as the sidekick. In a lot of cases, it feels like Odie is forgotten or ignored in favor of the over-the-top antics of Garfield.
However, while Odie might be seen as a sidekick to Garfield, in The Garfield Movie (2024), it was clear that our favorite fat cat needs his canine companion. Without Odie, Garfield just doesn't work. There is something so special about the relationship these two have and it was clear that the movie decided to shine a spotlight on that.
**Spoilers for The Garfield Movie (2024) below**
At the very start of The Garfield Movie, we watch as Garfield introduces us to his story and his origins. And this includes having Odie at his side, acting as his assistant. We also see Odie joining the family after Jon brings baby Garfield home. Right away, it is clear that these two are going to be the very best of friends. From running around the house together (well having Odie run and Garfield ride him like a mini horse) to working together to get their paws on plenty of treats, these two are inseparable in the movie.
The inseparableness of this dynamic duo is only emphasized when Garfield and Odie end up getting kidnapped by two dogs and bird and taken to an abandoned mall, where they are hung upside down until a mystery figure comes to rescue them. Even as they hang their waiting to either be rescued or released, these two play off of each other brilliantly.
Even as they go on an adventure that is both ridiculous and in some cases potentially dangerous, Odie does a lot of the heavy lifting when it comes to rescues and moving the story along. Without Odie, Garfield would not only be in so much more trouble, but it often felt like he would have been stuck without a clue as to what to do next.
Odie proved in The Garfield Movie, that he is more than just Garfield's sidekick, he is his loyal companion and equal partner in crime (or at least naughty behavior). We have always loved Odie and what he brings to the table, but now it feels like he is getting more of a spotlight than ever before and we love that so much!
Honestly, I would love to see more Odie in the future, especially this version of the character. It would be nice to see him get more of a spotlight, while also being seen as a hero in his own right.
The Garfield Movie premieres in theaters nationwide on May 24!
