Could there be a sequel to The Garfield Movie (2024)?

Could we potentially see a sequel to The Garfield Movie (2024)? Is there enough interest in our favorite lasagna loving feline to get more of his adventures with Odie at his side?

Although the new Garfield adventure has only had one weekend at the domestic box office to prove itself at the time of writing, we actually have some thoughts on the movie and whether or not we could see a sequel. All things considered, the movie has already done decently well at the global box office, and while it may have fallen short when it comes to leading the Memorial Day Weekend (MDW) box office, that doesn't mean it hasn't shown some promise in terms of success.

While monetarily, The Garfield Movie only pulled in about $31.1 million for its opening weekend, the fact that the ticket prices for the movie were a bit lower than its competition might have had something to do with the fact that it didn't top the box office and it made a bit less than expected. It also didn't help that the weather wasn't the best in the southern states, even as Deadline reports that more people went to see Garfield than Furiosa in theaters for MDW.

But what does any of that have to do with a sequel? Well, box office success is a big contributing factor to whether or not a movie will get a second outing. And of course, there has to be interest from viewers before a studio is going to invest in a sequel of any kind.

However, we do have to point out that after the credits finished rolling, we did get a comic strip of Garfield asking why people were still in the theater and then saying he knew why. That's because "you're waiting for the sequel." The fact that a Garfield comic strip hinted at a potential sequel was enough to get our hopes up. After all, the end of the movie itself gave us plenty of Garfield and his dad moments, while also bringing other characters that Garfield met on this adventure into the picture.

With so many characters showing up to celebrate Garfield, it would make sense that we could see another movie featuring these characters and how they have changed Garfield and Odie's life. Or at the very least, we could see more of Garfield and his dad, Vic, together as they navigate what could be a new normal.

Honestly, even if we just got to see more of Garfield and Odie with Jon it would be a big win for the characters and us. While some people thought the movie was too much in terms of the grand adventure, for others it was a fun time that saw Garfield out of the house and learning new things. That doesn't mean that a sequel couldn't work perfectly to give us more at home time with Garfield and Odie. After all, even in the comics we know that Garfield had plenty of adventures around his own home.

We would love to see more of Garfield, Odie, Jon, Vic, and even some of the other characters that we met in this film. So if there is even a chance that we could get a sequel to The Garfield Movie, count us in.
