There are so many dog breeds around the world and some are more popular or well-known than others. One dog breed that has an interesting history is the Border Collie. As working dogs, these pups are often associated with their work herding sheep and other animals.

However, there is more to the Border Collie than just their work and herding abilities. And that is why we wanted to know whether or not they would be good family dogs.

It turns out that while they are definitely highly affectionate with their families, they are also relatively good with children, although it is recommended that you stay close by when there are very small children in the home. In part, this is because Border Collies have a lot of energy and will herd children.

A Border Collie can be a great family dog

According to the American Kennel Club (AKC), this is a breed that is known to be "amiable among friends, they may be reserved with strangers." This means that while they will be great with your family and even close friends, they won't be as warm with strangers or even acquaintances that are not around often.

As someone who adopted a Border Collie mix from the shelter, I can say that at least in our case, the breed was warm and affectionate with a penchant for keeping everyone in the household in line. She loved to cuddle and snooze, but she also loved to run around the yard. She had no problem chasing squirrels or keeping her fellow pups in line. And yes, she definitely got the zoomies.

Border Collies are definitely an active breed and that is something to consider when thinking about bringing home one of these dogs. And of course, you will also want to think about just how much energy you have when it comes to trying to keep up with a herding dog like a Border Collie.
