Much like humans, dogs can suffer with allergies. And while they may not have as many or even the same allergies as their human counterparts, that doesn't mean that dogs might not be allergic to things that we are as well. And one of those allergies has to do with cats.
If you are a dual pet household, you might sometimes wonder about your dog and cat and how they are with each other. But have you ever been concerned about your dog being allergic to the cat? We wanted to know more about dogs and cats in terms of allergies, so we did some digging.
It turns out that dogs can in fact be allergic to cats. According to a report from Kinship, just like humans can be allergic to the dander of a cat, so too can dogs. It does sound like this is not a common allergy and it is something that might develop over time, but it is a possibility.
Yes, your dog could be allergic to the cat
The biggest problem with a dog being allergic to a cat, is that the symptoms might look the same as any other allergy, or even other health issues. Some of the same signs of allergies in dogs are also associated with things like fleas or even a problem with their hormones. That is because an allergic reaction in a dog might consist of loss of hair, excessive itching and even skin that looks irritated. All of this can be symptoms of other problems.
If you do have a dog experiencing these problems, a veterinarian might recommend testing to determine what the issue is and it is entirely possible that there are more than one allergen impacting your pup.
We have a staff pup and a staff cat, and while they don't have issues with each other, we are always mindful of their health and interactions. Having had a dog in the past who ended up with a number of allergies, including one to the cat, we know that it can pop up suddenly and be a source of irritation for your pup. And of course, depending on the relationship between your dog and cat, it can be hard to keep the two apart if allergies develop.
If you have any concerns regarding possible allergies, we highly recommend speaking to your vet, as they will be able to help you and your pets.
