Are you a pet parent? Are you prepared for whatever comes your way with a pet in your life? Having a first aid kit for your pet, will definitely make life just a little bit easier as a pet parent. But what should you have in a first aid kit for your animal?

Thankfully, we have PetMD to guide us in putting together a first aid kit dedicated specifically for our animals. But what exactly are their suggestions for what we need? In a post over on Instagram, they shared what they think the top 10 most necessary items you need to have on hand to take care of your pet are.

Honestly, putting together a first aid kit for your pet is not going to look the exact same as putting one together for people. So some of the items that we put in a pet first aid kit might just surprise you, because they may not seem like the type of items you would put into a first aid kit of any kind. But, that’s why these types of guides can be important. They can show us things that we didn’t know we needed.

So what exactly is PetMD recommending that pet parents put into their first aid kits?

10 items your pet first aid kit should include

On top of these 10 essential items, there are a few other items we suggest as well to round out your first aid kit, which you will find below.

  • Nail Trimmers
  • Transport Aids (think support collars, towels and more)
  • Styptic Powder (If you aren’t familiar with this product, it can help stop the flow of blood from a cut or wound. Many men use this when cutting themselves shaving.)
  • Thermometer for Pets
  • Wound Care Items (think ointments and sprays)
  • Bandages
  • Eye Wash
  • Needleless Syringe
  • Probiotics (these help with potential tummy problems)
  • Cleanup Items (such as wipes)

Other essential items that can make rounding out your first aid kit for your pet complete include an emergency contact card, dog treats, and tweezers. Unlike the first aid kit that we think of for ourselves, the ones we are putting together for pets are typically a bit larger and include things you might not consider being important. However, having things like towels and treats on hand can go a long way to making your pet comfortable if there is a problem.

A few other things you might want to consider when putting together a kit for your pet is any medication’s that they need to take, and supplies you would consider as part of a go bag. Having a few extra things in a first aid kit for your pet, is never a bad idea.
