Halloween isn't just for humans. Your furry companion can join in on the fun, too! From cute costumes to exciting activities, there are plenty of ways to include your dog in the haunted celebrations. Here are five creative ways to make sure your dog has a paw-some Halloween.

5 tips for Halloween fun with dogs

Take Your Dog Trick-or-Treating

Why leave your dog at home when they can join in the trick-or-treating fun? This is a great opportunity for both of you to get in the Halloween spirit by dressing up in themed costumes. Whether you’re trick-or-treating with family or just taking a walk around the neighborhood, your pup can accompany you and enjoy the excitement, if they’re socialized and comfortable with the situation.

However, it’s important to consider your dog’s temperament before bringing them along. Some dogs may feel anxious or scared in crowded, noisy environments. Trick-or-treating usually involves a lot of people, loud sounds, and unfamiliar sights, which can be overwhelming for some dogs.

Signs your dog might be uncomfortable include:

  • Panting, drooling, or shaking.
  • Trembling or shaking.
  • Tucking their tail.
  • Pulling on leash.
  • Excessive barking or growling

If your dog shows any of these signs, it’s best to get them home in a safe, quiet environment rather than exposing them to unnecessary stress.

Host a Dog-Friendly Trunk-or-Treat

Trunk-or-treat events have become incredibly popular as a fun and safe alternative to traditional door-to-door trick-or-treating. These events typically take place in parking lots, with participants decorating the trunks of their cars and handing out candy from the back. You can adapt this growing trend by hosting a dog-friendly trunk-or-treat event!

Invite your friends, family, or local dog-loving community to join in by decorating their car trunks with Halloween themes and handing out dog-safe treats. Include games and activities, like a costume contest, giving dogs and their owners a fun experience as they stroll from trunk to trunk.

Coordinate Costumes with Your Dog(s)

This one should be a no brainer! One of the most fun and creative ways to include your dog in Halloween is by coordinating your costumes! Whether it's just you and your pup or a whole family, the possibilities for themed costumes are endless. For multi-dog households, you can even create a group ensemble that includes everyone.

Costume Ideas:

Disney & Pixar: Legendary ideas like Woody and Buzz Lightyear. If you want to go new school and you have multiple dogs, they could dress up as Bluey and Bingo. The entire family could tranform into The Incredibles! The possibilities are endless.

Classic Costumes: Then there are the classic choices, like superheroes and their sidekicks. Also the more famous duos like Charlie Brown and Snoopy, Shaggy and Scooby-Doo, or Dorothy and Toto.

Make sure your dog’s costume is comfortable and doesn’t restrict their movement or breathing. If they seem uneasy in a full costume, try something simple like a spooky bandana or other appropriately themed accessories.

Find Local Dog-Friendly Halloween Events

If you and your dog are social butterflies, attending local dog-friendly Halloween events is a great way to celebrate the season together. Many communities host fun, pet-centered events during Halloween, such as costume contests, or pet-friendly festivals. These events are perfect for dogs who enjoy being around other pets and people, and they provide a fun opportunity for both of you to show off your creative costumes.

How to Find Dog-Friendly Halloween Events:

Check Local Pet Stores: Many pet stores, especially national chains, host Halloween events for dogs, including costume contests or treat giveaways.

Look at Local Animal Shelters or Rescues: Shelters and rescues often host pet-friendly events to raise awareness and funds. They might have Halloween-themed adoption days, or spooky fundraising walks.

Social Media & Online Pet Communities: Local dog owner groups on social media platforms, like Facebook or Instagram, often post details about dog-friendly Halloween events.

Stay In and Bake Homemade Dog Treats

Not every dog enjoys the excitement and noise of Halloween. If your pup prefers to stay at home in a calm, cozy environment, why not make the night special by baking some homemade dog treats together? This is a great way to keep them happy and engaged while ensuring they enjoy a Halloween treat of their own.
