Canine Cottages shares how dogs help with Seasonal Affective Disorder

Reservation dogs, or "rez dogs" roaming freely are a common sight on the Blackfeet Reservation. Many residents simply leave their gates open so that their dogs can move around as they please. Sometimes shaggy and often not wearing collars, people passing through might assume they are feral, but these dogs are considered an important part of the community and there is more to their story.04122021 Rez Dogs Browning Blackfeet J

Everyone is looking forward to fall with the leaves changing but it’s not all fun as some start to have some seasonal depression. Thankfully if you have dogs, you might be in the clear.

While it’s not a catch-all, a recent study shared by Canine Cottages of the UK and psychologist, Dr. Becky Spelman has weighed in. Whether you’re just now experiencing “Seasonal Affective Disorder” aka SAD, your pups might be the boost you need.

If you’re unfamiliar, Seasonal Affective Disorder is something most people deal with when the sun isn’t out as much as it’s fall. With the seasons changing, it can always be a difficult transition.

Thankfully if you have dogs, then things might not be as dark as they seem and instead are a little bit brighter due to the presence and loyalty of your favorite furry companion.

While Canine Cottages has delved into a lot of other topics, this is one I’m sure a lot of us can relate to. When the seasons start changing and things grow darker, moods start to shift but if you’re a dog owner, things might end up being a bit easier than imagined.

In the study, Canine Cottages and Becky Spelman shared your dogs help make this change not as significant. Startoff, people tend to lean on their pups during tough times and SAD is no exception. Another thing people don’t focus on during because of SAD is exercising yet having a dog changes that as they encourage you to get out and go for walks. Fresh air is always a big help, no matter the time of day.

In comparison to other factors in our lives, dogs are usually non-stressful so we’re more likely to be calm around they, 81% of the people surveyed agreed and that’s not surprising in the slightest. Lastly, being around your dog can make you feel more confident and cozy as you’re set in a routine with your pup and likely will have some snuggle time with them.

Whether you’re looking for a purpose or just want something to help curb your loneliness, the key might be right under your nose.
