When it comes to being a pet parent, there are a lot of expenses associated with our pups, including vet visits. And if you have one of the healthiest dogs, that could help save some money, at least when it comes to heading to the veterinarian.

In fact, it can be important to know what the health outlook of any breed you are bringing home looks like in order to determine if you can afford the pup you want. For some pet parents, it makes sense to choose your next furry friend based on whether or not they are one of the healthiest dog breeds out there.

Luckily for us, we did some research on healthy dogs and came up with five dog breeds that are considered the healthiest, with less medical issues to contend with in the long run.

So which breeds are considered the healthiest?

5 of the healthiest dog breeds

  • Australian Cattle Dog – According to Daily Paws, this breed is actually known for its longevity. In fact, a dog from this breed made it into the Guinness Book of World Records for living to an impressive 29-years-old! A major part of why these dogs are considered very healthy is due to their activity levels. These pups are active, which helps with their overall health.
  • Australian Shepherd – Maybe it’s the Australian in their name, but when it comes to medium dog breeds, the Australian Shepherd is another pup known for their good health. Even as these dogs get older, they like to stay active, which contributes to their overall good health. Their energy levels are a bonus and we love that.
  • Poodle – Whether you choose a Standard Poodle, a Toy Poodle, or even a Miniature Poodle, this breed is known for many things, including being healthy and living longer lives. These dogs also shed less than you might expect and they are also very intelligent dogs. We are actually big fans of Poodles, but we definitely recommend learning more about their grooming needs before choosing one.
  • Havanese – Looking for smaller dog breeds? Do you happen to live in warmer climates? Then the Havanese is the healthy dog you are looking for. These pups can handle the heat and they can be very active as they do like to put on the speed. The only concern overall, is that in smaller dog breeds they are prone to kidney and liver disease, so this is something to pay attention to. However, they are an overall healthy dog that can live an average of 14 to 16 years.
  • Shiba Inu – This a dog breed that has been around for centuries and while there are a few concerns to pay attention, overall they are known for their general good health and longevity. The concerns for these dogs revolves around obesity and dental health. These two things can actually shorten their otherwise quite impressive life span. Typically, the Shiba Inu lives on average between 13 and 15 years.
