The hound category is a very specific group of dog breed, specifically bred for the purpose of hunting, according to the American Kennel Club. These dogs are known for having a very strong sense of smell and a lot of stamina. Which makes sense, when you consider what their purpose is. However, there is more to the hound dog, than just being hunters.

There are actually 32 breeds of dog that fall under the category of hound. And thanks to Yahoo! News, we have a better idea of which of the hound dogs would actually be perfect as family pets. In general, hound dogs are known to be high energy, and very smart. In fact, this is some thing that makes them great as family pets, their cuteness and their brains.

So which of the hound dogs are at the top of the list for best family pets? Here are the top five.

  1. The Basset Hound – When it comes to the Basset Hound, their cute but droopy appearance may make them seem like they are sad pups, however, they are actually very social animals who love people. They are known for being companion dogs with a cheerful disposition. They have a very easy-going nature and they’re actually relatively low energy. They are great for families, however, they do have a bit of a stubborn streak. This means that you will want to be patient with them, as they will dig in their heels at times.
  2. The Bloodhound – While the Bloodhound also has a relatively droopy appearance, they are another great breed for families. In general, these dogs are very gentle and easy-going. They do require a lot more exercise than the Basset Hound. However, this could be a great thing for a family with children, as the kids can help with burning off that excess energy. It is important for these dogs to be in a fenced in yard, as they do have a tendency to not pay attention to their surroundings, and if they start tracking some thing they can easily get lost.
  3. The Beagle – Another very popular dog breed is the Beagle. A big part of their popularity comes from the fact that Snoopy himself is a Beagle. In general, this particular hound breed is known for being great with people, their happy demeanor, and their ability to be peaceful. Just like other hounds, the Beagle does require a bit more exercise. We also have to point out that this dog is great with children as well, making them perfect for families.
  4. The American Foxhound – You may not have heard of the American Foxhound before, however, this is one of the first breeds to be recognized by the American Kennel Club. In general, this particular dog is known for being low maintenance. They are great companion animals, although they do need a lot of attention and exercise. This is a very social dog, and they tend to be very friendly with other animals and people. This is great if you’re looking for a family pet.
  5. The Dachshund – Did you know that the Dachshund was part of the hound group? This is considered one of the smallest dog breeds in this particular category, and they were initially utilized for hunting badgers. Considering these dogs are very tenacious, brave, and charming, it makes sense that people love this breed. Typically, these dogs are all about attention. They love being the center of attention and that is a good reason to pick a Dachshund if you have a family. They love being with people. This is a very popular dog breed for a lot of reasons, but their mischievous nature is definitely a positive for these pups.
