From an undercover PETA investigation to rescued dogs finding new homes, Mabel the Beagle has gone from a breeding lab to vegan sushi dates.

It’s the one year anniversary of Mabel the Beagle being rescued from a lab with the help of PETA and now that very same Beagle is living the good life. For nearly seven years, this poor pup was relegated to a cage of metal and concrete and forced to provide puppies for the now closed Envigo breeding facility. And then an undercover investigation blew the doors open on this lab and what it was doing to these dogs.

As one of the more senior dogs at the facility, Mabel had not had the best life. And then Natalie Hawkins, a PETA staffer met the Beagle and the rest was history. Alongside her husband, Charles Long, Hawkins has been helping to give Mabel the best life ever. This includes bringing her to the office, taking her for runs on the beach and even enjoying the occasional vegan sushi date night.

It turns out that Mabel also has a playful side, one that includes cheerfully destroying loose paper in her path and even carrying around a box of toys. Basically, this rescue Beagle is finally getting a chance to experience what it means to be a beloved pet and we love this for her so much.

And in honor of the one year anniversary of Mabel and the rest of these pups being freed from the facility, PETA is releasing a special video about Mabel’s life post lab.

According to PETA Senior Vice President Daphna Nachminovitch, “Having gone from a crowded, chaotic laboratory breeding mill to a safe and caring home, Mabel is now a beloved family member who will never be bred, caged, or exploited again.”
