Owning any dog comes with its own unique moments and challenges but the moments that come with owning a Dachshund seem to be a little more different than with other dogs. The longness of their bodies makes for a unique experience as does their “take no prisoners” personality. Let’s take a look at a few things that make owning a Dachshund like no other.

Long bodies are not always a good thing

Let’s start with the difficult part. Because Dachshunds are so long, as they grow older, they tend to have back problems. With nothing really supporting their middles, it’s easy to understand why the back can start hurting, and slipping a disc is way too easy.

If you’ve ever heard the cry of a dachshund who has hurt their back, you wonder WTF the breeders were thinking.

But there are ways to prevent some of the back issues. When you’re picking them up, make sure to fully support their back, don’t let them jump off high surfaces, and be careful when letting them near stairs. And the older they get, the more you want to protect their backs.

There will be barking

I happen to own the rare dachshund that doesn’t bark at the wind and every sound in the house, but that’s not very common. Most Dachshunds are barkers. They like to talk and they love to make sure you, the mailperson, and the next-door neighbor know they are nearby.

The Dachshund is like no other dog

It’s certainly something you can train them to do less but with their personalities, they are going to bark at some point. You might as well accept it now.

A whole lot of attitude in a little package

While each Dachshund is certainly different, every dachshund has a BIG personality. They are feisty and mischievous and sassy and larger-than-life. They are the equivalent of your short friend who is very loud.

Except your Dachshund doesn’t understand that they are smaller than almost everyone else. They will run after that big dog and you will probably have to run after them because OMG that dog is 10 times heavier than them and what if they step on your baby?!?!
