Are blueberries safe for dogs to eat?

Spring has sprung and summer isn’t too far off, all of this means that it is berry season. So with blueberries on the menu, are they safe for our dogs to snack on too?

When it comes to snacking during the warmer months of the year, fruit and especially berries are at the top of our list. And this includes creating snacks and treats for our dogs.

If you are looking for fresh fruits that you can add to your dog’s diet that might already be on your shopping list, you might be curious about some of the berries that are in season for Spring and Summer. For us, blueberries are at the top of our list for snacking on fresh fruits, right next to strawberries, cherries, and even pineapple.

So are blueberries a dog safe fruit?

Can dogs eat blueberries?

The answer is a resounding yes! According to the AKC,

"Blueberries are a superfood rich in antioxidants, which prevent cell damage in humans and canines alike. They’re packed with fiber and phytochemicals as well. Teaching your dog to catch treats in the air? Try blueberries as an alternative to store-bought treats."

Honestly, we love adding blueberry to treats for our dogs. And we have even offered up some recipes in the past featuring this delicious berry that are great for spoiling our pups throughout the summer months. Of course, we can use these recipes all year long, and even just toss a few berries our dog’s way too.

Knowing that our dogs can safely eat blueberries is exciting news for a lot of reasons. Not only is it great for not letting any fruit go to waste in our fridge, but we love having more options for fresh ingredients and products to give our pups. And honestly, we just love the idea of adding this fruit to recipes for our dogs.
