Back in 2018, there was this Golden Retriever who braved the rainy and cold weather in his cute little raincoat in order to cheer on all of the runners during the Boston Marathon at his most favorite spot ever, the 26.2 mile mark near Ashland State Park. His name was Spencer and he unfortunately lost his battle with cancer last week at the age of 13.

Meet Penny. Penny was Spencer’s “sibling” who also enjoyed cheering on the runners. Unfortunately, just over a week later, Penny crossed the Rainbow Bridge at the age of 11.

A Golden Retriever is a loyal and loving dog…just what Spencer and Penny were and always will be, especially to the Boston Marathon!

Starting off with her “brother” Spencer, he first became famous and went viral back in 2018. However, since 2020, Spencer had unfortunately had many health problems and even one scare where a benign tumor on his liver and spleen nearly ruptured. In 2021, that tumor became cancerous and Spencer eventually began to undergo chemotherapy to help him with pain.

Just last Spring (in 2022), Spencer was named the official dog of the 126th Boston Marathon! And they honored him earlier this year with a massive portrait to thank him for all of his support.

His “sister” Penny began to follow in his footsteps and loved cheering people on from all over during all sorts of different events.

Oddly enough, Penny was found to have almost an identical tumor to the one that Spencer had, even in the same places, between her liver and her spleen. After being told that surgery would only buy them very little time, they made the unimaginably tough decision to let her go while she was still comfortable. She passed just 8 days after “brother” Spencer.

Here’s what the owners, the Powers’ Family had to say about their two beloved pups’ passings:

"“…You are with your soulmate Spencer with your frisbees and ball. You are forever in our hearts. Thank you all for your caring about this special duo.”"

In honor of both Spencer and Penny, the Powers Family has set up a fundraiser which you can check out right over here and show your support however it is that you’d like to!

Until both of their very last breaths, the Powers Family held them, thanked them, and prayed.
