Did you know that Camp Bow Wow is one of the largest doggy day care and overnight boarding franchises in North America? And when it comes to dogs, they know safety.

So when it comes to the “number 1 most dangerous holiday for dogs,” it just makes sense that Camp Bow Wow would have some tips to help us keep our dogs safe on the Fourth of July. And while some might seem relatively obvious or fall in line with things you already do or plan to do, we hope that this helps all the pet parents out there looking to keep their pets safe on Independence Day.

According to Erin Askeland, Camp Bow Wow‘s expert on animal health and behavior, “It can be hard to anticipate how your pet might react to the stimulation of fireworks and large crowds at parades, community events or even in your own backyard during holiday celebrations.” And that is why, we always want to be prepared and proactive when it comes to planning for a holiday like the Fourth of July when there are more people out and about, fireworks, and more dangers than we might normally see on a regular summer day (or night).

So what tips does Camp Bow Wow have for us this Fourth of July?

Camp Bow Wow shares their Fourth of July safety tips

  • It’s best to keep your dog away from overly crowded spaces and anywhere that they will be shooting off fireworks.
  • Keep your dog inside during the peak firework times. (Once it starts to get dark, it is best to keep your pups safe and inside.)
  • While this should be an everyday thing, it is especially important to have your dog’s collar and ID on them in case they do get away from you.
  • Take your pup for an early morning walk to avoid the crowds and noise, but still give them the activity they need for their mental and physical well-being.
  • Make sure that your pup is in the room that will be the quietest even during the fireworks and then further muffle the sounds from outside by using calming music and even using rolled up towels or pillows to block doors and windows.
  • A thundershirt might help your pup with any anxiety related to the loud noises.
  • Check with your veterinarian for any suggestions they may have, including calming chews or even medications.
