And if Dr. Glass seems familiar, you would be right, as not only have we shared some other tips from her in the past, but she is also known for Roman to the Rescue on Disney and even Nat Geo Wild’s Vet School. But when it comes to pet safety in the summer, we are always looking for fresh tips and reminders that will keep our pups just as happy as any other time of the year!
So what exactly did she have to say as we head into the heart of summer and of course the holiday gatherings (Independence Day and Labor Day)?
FreshPet’s veterinarian, Dr. Aziza Glass shares some tips for summer pet safety
A big thing that both humans and pets can deal with during the summer is heat stroke. And since this can come on so quickly, it is important to know what to do if your pet is in distress.
The first thing to note is that you do NOT want to give your pet an ice bath if they are suffering from heat stroke! According to FreshPet and Dr. Glass, “Ice baths are wrong solutions for heat stroke and will send your dog’s body into shock.”
But what should you do instead? It’s all about a “water soak.” This means using water that is at room temperature on a towel and wiping down your pet to help bring their body temperature down. This will also give them the best chance of being able to regulate their temperatures.
If your dog does have issues with the heat or suffers from heat stroke at any point during the summer, it is important to speak to your veterinarian and let them know what is or has happened.
Another thing that can help with pet safety in the summer is limiting their outdoor time. Also, it is always a good idea to choose the cooler parts of the day for any walks or outdoor time.
And just like with our own health, hydration is important. So make sure your pet is getting plenty of water!
It is always important to pay attention to our pets, especially during a season when so many health issues can crop up thanks to the heat and sun.
