In honor of Women’s History Month, we here at Dog O’Day are shining a spotlight on some very special women and their dogs. Gillian Anderson is one of those women. However, while we love the fact that the actress is a dog mom to a pup named Stella and a pup named Nelson, we are not just focusing on her and her dogs.

Instead of focusing solely on her pup momness (made up words for the win right?), we are actually interested in her work as an animal rights activist. Because while we are all about the dogs and the dog moms of the world, we actually didn’t realize that Anderson is so passionate about animal rights that she has actually won awards for her work!

According to Found Animals, part of her activism has focused on animal testing and “in 2009, she encouraged every Member of the European Parliament to vote to protect animals.” Seriously, she plays strong women on screen and she turns around and is a hero in real life too.

Gillian Anderson is more than a dog mom, she is also an animal rights activist

Among the topics that Anderson has protested and actively sought to stop were toxicity tests on animals, which she spoke up about in 2015 while filming in India and even commercial seal hunting, which she wrote to the Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, about in 2017.

Basically, if the actress sees an injustice happening in relation to animals, she uses her voice to speak out for the defenseless. And we love her for that.

Of course, as a dog mom we would expect nothing less. While the real focus here has been on the actress as an activist for animals, we would be remiss if we didn’t point out that if you follow her on Instagram, you can occasionally see glimpses of both Stella and Nelson, as she is known to share pictures of both of her pups with her followers.
