Can dogs eat oranges?

When it comes to citrus, there are plenty of fruits to choose from. And while our dogs may not be able to eat every fruit out there, we want to know whether or not it is safe for them to eat oranges.

Considering how delicious oranges can be, we definitely think it is important to pay attention to whether or not our dogs can enjoy them too, just in case they try to steal one of ours. Because, I don’t know about you, but we have a staff pup with sticky paws (a doggy version of sticky fingers). If we have something, she wants to try it. And that includes fruits.

While we have looked into how safe lemons are for our dogs (spoiler alert – not so much), we are now turning to another citrus must-have, oranges.

So can our dogs enjoy oranges? Is this a dog-safe option when it comes to citrus?

Is it safe for our dogs to snack on oranges?

As long as our dogs are only eating the fleshy part of the orange, this is in fact a safe fruit for dogs to eat. But that’s not all. According to the fine animal lovers of the Chewy Blog, the benefits of eating oranges for our dogs include,

"Excellent source of vitamin C, potassium, and fiber.High water content can provide extra hydration.Nutrients can have a positive effect on a dog’s immune system."

While there are always potential risks when it comes to adding new things to a dog’s diet, perhaps the most important thing to note is that if your dog has diabetes, you will want to avoid oranges because they can cause issues with their sugar levels.
