Have you ever given your pup leftovers? Have they ever tried to steal your sandwich and you were concerned about their safety? For this “can they have it” segment, we look to the delicious sourdough bread to see if this is something our dogs can safely indulge in.

In general, we really don’t believe in feeding dogs human foods. But, at the same time, there are plenty of ingredients, whether we are talking meats, vegetables, or fruits that are dog safe, dog approved, and perfectly safe for making fresh treats and food at home.

But when it comes to something along the lines of sourdough bread, things change. The reason for that is the fact that we aren’t talking about pork, pumpkin, or blueberries. We are talking about a bread.

But not just any bread, as sourdough bread is made by fermenting the dough. And that is enough to have us stopping to consider whether this is a dog-friendly food item.

Can our dogs eat sourdough bread?

According to Chewy, the answer is a straight out no. Our dogs cannot eat sourdough bread, although a small bite of fully cooked bread should not be too terrible if your dog does try to snag a bite.

And why can’t they eat this delicious bread that so many of us love ourselves?

"Sourdough bread IS bad for dogs. And if the bread is uncooked—meaning your dog ate raw dough—it can be even worse."

According to a veterinarian from an Oklahoma animal hospital the bread, “contains yeast and may bloat in their gastrointestinal tract.” And as we previously mentioned, sourdough is a fermented dough, which means that when your dog ingests this product, it can produce alcohol in their system, which is toxic (this is important to consider if they get into raw dough).

All of this to say that when it comes to sourdough bread, it is not a dog-friendly treat in any way. And if your pup does get their teeth on a slice or the bread (or your unattended sandwich), we definitely recommend paying attention to your pup and watch for signs of bloat.
