Arizona high school animal mascots: What’s out there?

What’s out there with Arizona high school animal mascots?

As part of our countrywide roundup of animal mascots in high school sports, Dog O’Day turns to Arizona this time to see what’s there.

We used Mascot DB as our main resource, and apologize if we left out your school or misspelled something.

Arizona high school sports are governed by the Arizona Interscholastic Association, which governs sports and non-athletic activities like chess and theatre.

What Arizona high school animal mascots are there?

Unsurprisingly, there are a lot of horsey names when it comes to Arizona high school animal mascots, beginning with the Parker Broncs and the Broncos of Phoenix Brophy and San Tan Valley Poston Butte. There are also the Chargers of  Gilbert Arete Prep, Queen Creek Franklin, Tempe McClintock and Tucson Cholla.

a herd of eight Mustangs roam throughout the state, at Chandler Skyline, Heber Mogollon, Kayenta Monument Valley, Mesa Dobson, Peoria Sunrise Mountain, Phoenix North, Sahuarita and Scottsdale Rancho Solano

And there are also the Stallions of Mesa Sequoia and Surprise Shadow Ridge, along with the Laveen Fairfax Stampede.

Chandler Basha, Coolidge, Prescott Boulder Mountain, Scottsdale Bella Vista are all the Bears; Kearns Canyon Hopi and Phoenix Browne are the Bruins to go with the Shonto Prep Grizzlies.

Snakes are also popular, represented by the Glendale Cactus Cobras,  Beaver Dam Diamondbacks; Phoenix North Canyon Rattlers; Avondale Estrella and San Luis Sidewinders, and Buckeye Verrado and Tucson San Miguel Vipers

There are four sets of Dragons, from Avondale West Point, Chandler Arizona Compass Prep, Mesa Sun Valley and Phoenix Bioscience, respectively.

There are also a lot of Rams – Maricopa, Queen Creek Canyon State, Phoenix Washington and Wellton Anteater Union all use the nickname.

Insects provide the Gonado Hornets and Yellowjackets of Lakeside Blue Ridge and Tombstone.

Cattle are represented in the Tempe Buffaloes, Payson and San Simon Longhorns, Mesa Mountain View Toros and Phoenix South Pointe Mavericks.

Desert denizens show up in the Mesa Riverview Chameleons, Gila Bend Gila Monsters, Mesa Jackrabbits, and Scorpions from Goodyear Desert Edge and Sedona Red Rock.

Various weasely creatures include the Prescott and Tucson Magnet Badgers, Kearny Ray Bearcats, and the Wolverines of Chandler El Dorado, Safford Mount Graham and Telleson.

Mythology brings us the Buckeye Odyssey Minotaurs and the Griffins of Peoria Glendale, Phoenix South Pointe and Tucson Green Fields Country Day.

Finally, other animals include the Seligman Antelopes, Eagar Round Valley Elks, Salome Frogs, Phoenix Xavier Gators, Florence Gophers and Phoenix Desirado Sharks.
