NASCAR Cup Series Director Jay Fabian has been arrested on charges of animal cruelty, and as a result has stepped back from his duties.

This happened on Monday, August 21 following an incident in July.

While we here at Dog O’Day typically love to focus on the good parts of pets and the ways they enrich our lives, sometimes unfortunate events like this occurs, and it ought to be reported as well.

This news was announced on Twitter by Fox Sports reporter Bob Pockrass and previously reported by racing news site Frontstretch.

A NASCAR official has been arrested on charges of animal cruelty.

Pockrass states that the warrants for Fabian’s arrest allege willful neglect of his dogs, as one died after being deprived of “all necessary sustenance in which to live,” while a second dog suffered from “extreme dehydration and starvation,” while a third was deprived of “necessary sustenance.”

This seems to be a clear violation of North Carolina animal cruelty laws.

Taken together, these conditions and actions are deplorable, and stain the world of stock car auto racing and pet ownership, making organizations like Cup Series driver Erik Jones’ foundation, which is a proponent for animal wellness as one of its main aims, all the more necessary.

“NASCAR takes this situation seriously and will continue to gather information as it becomes available,” the sanctioning body’s statement on the matter reads, according to Pockrass.

Several people will fill Fabian’s role for the time being.

This doesn’t improve the image of the organization very much, given multiple safety issues this season, at Circuit of the Americas and Indianapolis Motor Speedway in particular, and following multiple drivers’ very public reluctance to be vaccinated as the pandemic continues to take a toll on the nation.
