Alaska high school animal mascots: What’s out there?

What Alaska high school animal mascots are out there?

Alaska high school sports are governed by the Alaska School Activities Association, which sanctions championships in baseball, basketball, bowling, cheer, cross country, esports, flag football, football, gymnastics, hockey, shooting, skiing, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, volleyball and wrestling.

As with all of our animal mascot research across the country, the main resource used was Mascot DB, and we apologize if we left your school out or misspelled it.

Most Alaska high school animal mascots reflect the variety of wild animals on land and sea, resulting in some of the most unusual team nicknames in the nation.

What Alaska high school animal mascots are out there?

There are 11 sets of Wolverines roaming the state, representing Cordova, Dillingham, Kivalina McQueen, Kongiganak Kiunya, Ninlichik, Point Lay Kali, Shaktoolik, South Anchorage, Thorne Bay, Tok and Tuluksak.

Bears are also very popular, for obvious reasons. Goodness Bay, Goodness Bay Rocky Mountain, Kodiak, Noorvik and Teller Isbell all use just plain Bears, while are the Amber, Kasiguik Akuik Memorial, and Upper Kaliskag Morgan are all the Grizzly Bears, with Anchorage Grace Christian, Anderson, Kaliskag as the Grizzlies.

And for good measure, there are also the Russian Mission Brown Bears, the Juneau-Douglas Crimson Bears, the Haines Glacier Bears, the Anchorage Bartlett Golden Bears, and Apangapook King Polar Bears.

When it comes to hooved mammals, there are the Rams from Fairbanks Monroe Catholic, Kaktovik Kaveolook and Talkeetna Sustina Valley, the Mustangs from Eagle River Chugiak and Marshall, and the Pelican Bucks and Palmer Moose,

The insect world is represented by the Napaskiak Oscarville Hornets.

In the ocean, rivers and adjacent land nearby, there are the King Salmon from Ketchikan and Pilot Station, the Buckland Belugas and Wales Kingikmiut Killer Whales, and Seldovia English Sea Otters.
