What Alaska high school bird mascots are out there?

While Alaska isn’t exactly known as a hotbed of high school sports, there are still quite a few scattered across the state, with canine, feline, bird and animal mascots aplenty.

Alaska high school sports are governed by the Alaska School Activities Association, which sanctions championships in baseball, basketball, bowling, cheer, cross country, esports, flag football, football, gymnastics, hockey, shooting, skiing, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track, volleyball and wrestling.

As with most of our research done on this project covering high school animal mascots around the country, the main resource used was Mascot DB, and we apologize if we left your school out or misspelled it.

What Alaska high school bird mascots are out there?

As with most states when it comes to bird mascots, Eagles is by far the most popular, with at least 17 schools using it. These are  Anchorage Heritage Christian, Angoon, Chignik Bay, Dot Lake, Elim Aniguin, Fort Yukon, Kwigillingok, Meade River Atquasuk, New Stuyahok Chief Ivan Blunka, Palmer Matanuska Christian, Perryville, Shungnak, St Mary’s Andreafski, Soldotna Cook Inlet Academy, West Anchorage, Whittier and Yakutat.

Seven Falcons fly across the state, at Atmautlauk Alexie, Fairbanks Fairhill Christian, Kipnuk Chief Paul Memorial, Juneau Thunder Mountain, Kotilik and Pitkas Point.

The most well-known of Alaska high school bird mascots would be the Seward Seahawks, where Tokyo 2020 Olympics swimmer Lilly King currently attends. Quinhagak Kuinerramiut Elitnaurvat is also the Seahawks, and Nightmute is home to the Nighthawks. There are a good deal of just plain Hawks as well in Big Lake Houston, Cantwell, Copper Center Kenny Lake, Galena and Napaskiak.

There are two Thunderbirds in East Anchorage and Kake, and then the Scammon Bay Blackbirds, Tuntutuliak Angapak Blue Jays, Keinai Kardinals, Eielson Ravens and St Paul Sea Parrots round out the Alaska high school bird mascots. (A “sea parrot” is apparently a puffin.)
