are What Alabama high school animal mascots are out there in the Yellowhammer State?

Alabama high school sports are mainly governed by the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA), which sanctions championships in baseball, basketball (boys and girls), cheer, cross country (boys and girls), football, soccer (boys and girls), softball, swimming and diving (boys and girls), tennis (boys and girls), track and field (indoor and outdoor, boys and girls), volleyball and wrestling, with 1A as the smallest classification and 7A the largest. Other smaller, private school-only, governing bodies also are out there as well.

While there are not that many high school mascots used within the state as compared to others, there are still a nice variety of animal mascots..

What Alabama high school animal mascots are there?

Bears are by far the most numerous of the Alabama high school animal mascots collectively; as Bear Creek Phillips, Buhl Sipsey Valley, Billingsley, Camp Hill Bell, Cottonwood, Leroy, Lynn, Orrville Keith, and Rainsville Plainview all use just that.

But there are also the Lexington, Lincoln, Robertsdale and Town Creek Hazelwood Golden Bears, likely after legendary University of Alabama football coach Bear Bryant.  There are also the Alexandria Valley Cubs and the Dothan Austin Black Bears as well.

Stinging insects are popular, as eight schools use Hornets – Chelsea, Dallas County, Demopolis Essex, Ider, Locust Fork, Town Creek Hatton, Mobile Baker and Opelika Beauregard – and another eight use Yellow Jackets – Abbeville, Aliceville, Glencoe, Jasper Curry, McCalla McAdory, Mobile McGill-Tooley, Vincent and Warrior Center. Finally, Oxford and Winston County use Yellowjackets, without the space.

Rams is also popular, as 10 schools – Albertville Asbury, Birmingham Carver, Birmingham Ramsay, Headland, Marion, Mobile Faith, Montgomery Brewbaker Tech, Northport Northside, Sylvaniaand Valley – all use the name.

Horses have a measureable presence as well – three Chargers exist in Columbiana Cornerstone Christian, Montevallo Catawba Christian and Tuscaloosa North River Christian, while there are four Mustangs in Madison Academy, Maplesville Isabella, Millbrook Elmore and Remlap Southeastern.

There are also the Colts of Athens Clements and Hope Hull Hooper, the Holly Pond Broncos, the Millbrook South Lamar Stallions and the Cottondale Bryant Stampede, too.

Cattle are represented in the Bison of Birmingham Parker and Higdon North Sand Mountain, the Linden Marengo Academy Longhorns and Spanish Fort Toros.

Rodents are represented in the Bearcats from Cullman and Weaver, and the Wolverines of Montgomery Carver.

Dragons fly at Birmingham Wenonah and Mobile Alabama MathSci, while Gators roam at Grove Hill Clarke Prep, Phenix City Glenwood and Satsuma.
