The Tom and Jerry movie topped the box office this weekend, which is a bit surprising.

For one thing, it’s wild that there were enough movie theaters open right now to have multiple releases showing. For another, as much as we love classic cartoons here at Dog O’Day, this film just looked…dreadful based on its trailer.

According to ComicBook.com, the Tom and Jerry movie earned $13.7 million in theaters this weekend, despite releasing on HBO Max at the same time (a technique pioneered by SCOOB last year).

Over four months past its initial release, The Croods: A New Age earned second place with $1.2 million (bringing its total to $52.3 million), while in No. 3 was the Denzel Washington/Rami Malek crime drama The Little Things ($925,000 this weekend, $12.9 million total through five weeks).

Rounding out the top five were Wonder Woman 1984 ($710,000 this weekend, $43.6 million total through nine weeks) and a Liam Neeson Western titled The Marksman ($700,000 this weekend, $12.3 million total through six weeks).

The Tom and Jerry movie topped the box office in its opening weekend.

But as the pandemic lingers, lighthearted entertainment always helps (something needs to counteract the heavy brilliance of WandaVision), and so we’re glad that the rascally catto and mischievous mouse did well.

The human stars of the Tom and Jerry movie include Chloe Grace Moretz (Bolt, The 5th Wave, Kick-A**) as an eager young hotel employee, Michael Pena (Ant-Man) as her boss, and Saturday Night Live star (and Scarlett Johansson’s husband) Colin Jost as the groom of an elaborate wedding that is taking place.

The same live-action/animation hybrid style used in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Space Jam, and Looney Tunes: Back in Action is used here, and will again be used in the upcoming Space Jam: A New Legacy, which stars the Los Angeles Lakers‘ LeBron James teaming up with Bugs Bunny, Lola Bunny and the rest of the Toon Squad.

Next. Cruella trailer promises a wild ride ahead. dark
