The Flat Matthew McConaughey Super Bowl LV ad may have won Best Commercial of Super Bowl 55.

Granted, that’s not exactly saying a whole lot when heavy hitters like Budweiser, Coke and Pepsi all skipped running ads, and everyone else kind of shrugged their shoulders and went through the motions, effectively asking audiences, “What tone are we supposed to be going for here? Advertising in a pandemic is weird.”

They’re not wrong, first off – it’s felt kind of weird having sports at all, much less a Super Bowl with fans, during the pandemic.

The Flat Matthew idea worked because it was just so fitting – daily life feels all out of shape, so while it lent itself well to the product of Doritos 3D Crunch returning, it also had a broader scope outside of its own context.

The Flat Matthew McConaughey ad for Doritos 3D may have won the Super Bowl.

Matthew Mconaughey wakes up, explaining how things have felt wrong lately – his dog can’t get him to play, coffee shop baristas think he’s invisible, a gust of wind could send him reeling.

Other celebrities appearing in cameos include Mindy Kaling and Jimmy Kimmel.

Finally, he sees a vending machine stocked with nothing but Doritos 3D Crunch, and being flat, slips inside the opening and steals a bag of chips. Their puffed shape allows him to return to normal human dimensions, though he is now trapped inside the machine as the spot ends.

It includes a dog, though he or she is not very relevant to the storyline at all, at least they appear in two scenes, one where he is trying to help McConaughey, the other while out for a walk. There were an estimated four or five Super Bowl commercials this year that mentioned dogs or cats at all, by a quick Dog O’Day staff poll, and one of those was Cheetos’ Chester Cheetah.

Another reason this ad worked was because Doritos 3D Crunch were originally introduced in the late 1990s, when Matthew McConaughey was starting to become a huge name, appearing in films like EDtv and The Wedding Planner.

McConaughey is also a big animal advocate and pet lover, and is the star and executive producer of a scripted Hank the Cowdog podcast, which is very good and a role he was born to play.

Doritos 3D Crunch are available in two flavors, Chili Cheese Nacho and Spicy Ranch. See their website for more details.
