In the winter, we are always looking for ways to protect and care for our pups. And this is especially true as they get older and enter their golden years. In fact, when it comes to caring for our senior dogs, we really want to make sure that we are doing what we need to in order to protect them in the harsher months of the year.

So what can you do to help your senior dog handle the winter months? Luckily for us, Dog Time had some great suggestions. Whether that means getting them the exercise they need (inside or out) or even making sure we keep their diets regulated, there are a lot of ways to help our older dogs live comfortable, healthy lives.

But there are certain tips and suggestions that we truly believe are at the top of the list.

3 tips for getting through winter with your senior dog

  • Consult with your veterinarian and keep your pup updated on their checkups. Your vet is the best tool in your arsenal for keeping your older dog healthy and happy. They will give you all the guidance you may need. And whether they offer dietary suggestions or recommend supplements, the vet will help ensure your senior pup is living their best life.
  • Winter gear is your older dog’s best friend. I know that there are plenty of people who shy away from dressing their dogs up, but in the case of an older dog, it can be highly beneficial to make sure they have booties on their feet to protect them from things like ice melt and salt. Even a coat or sweater can help them to regulate their body temperatures. Depending on where you and your pup live, that sweater or coat can protect from cold winds and stiff joints.
  • Warm, plush bedding is important for making your dog as comfortable as possible. Over the years, their joints can take a beating just like ours and with the right bedding they can get the comfort they need to make life better. And yes, warm bedding will help on even the coldest nights.
