The Pack cancelation news is disappointing.

The Pack cancelation comes after just one season for the highly-hyped Amazon Prime Video competition series.

For us here at Dog O’Day, this is rather depressing, as it was a fun premise with engaging editing and filming that really captured the human-canine relationship and bond of friendship, while at the same time showcasing beautiful scenery and fascinating cultural differences.

This news was broken by People Magazine on Wednesday night, January 13, about two months after the episodes released after being binge-dropped.

According to People, the reasoning for The Pack cancelation may come partially from unused video of a rock-climbing expedition near a waterfall, where several dogs seem to lose their balance in unsafe working conditions, The Wrap reported.

Another, more realistic reasoning for The Pack cancelation comes from it being a travel-based series, which doesn’t work well for a world in the middle of a pandemic. Also, the budget for this season must have been enormous, so it’s possible that it was simply too expensive to continue as well.

Hosted by Olympic-medaling skier Lindsey Vonn and her Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Lucy, the show featured a dozen pairs of dog-human teams grouped into two packs, Blue Pack and Green Pack, as they traveled across Los Angeles, Mexico City, Costa Rica, Vienna, Florence, Switzerland, Paris, London and Utah, which our columnist Holland the Pup is currently recapping.

The dogs ranged in size from toy breeds (one a model in commercials) and a Rat Terrier up to bigger dogs like Dixie the Coonhound and Snow the tie-dyed and mohawked Standard Poodle.

Some of the challenges included a soccer shootout, sniffing through a mock disaster scenario, zip-lining across Hollywood sets and South American jungle, skiing, canoeing and many game-show style puzzles.

The interesting part about this was that the dogs were just normal pets, not specially trained, which did make some of the adventures seem slightly concerning. However, the emphasis placed by the show on the safety team’s efforts to keep everyone healthy seemed to balance this out.
