The Sportmix dog food recall has been greatly expanded.

A Sportmix dog food recall has been greatly expanded by the Food and Drug Administration, Delish has reported.

Sportmix is one of the brands from Midwestern Pet Foods, which is headquartered in Chickasha, Oklahoma, which is about an hour west of Oklahoma City.

As of Monday, January 11, at least 70 pets have died and another 80 are sick after eating Sportmix pet food, leading to the Sportmix food recall. The key reasoning is because of potentially lethal levels of aflatoxin, which is a kind of mold that grows on corn plants and other grains.

According to an FDA report, some symptoms of aflatoxin poisoning in dogs include sluggishness and loss of appetite on the low end, and liver failure on the high end. Diarrhea may also occur, as could jaundice.

Pet owners are urged to stop using Midwestern Pet Foods brands immediately, and contact their local veterinarian if their pet is ill.

Missouri Department of Agriculture testing indicated in late December 2020 very high levels of aflatoxin, which was later determined by the company to come from the Oklahoma plant, and affect bags with an expiration date of March 2022.

The following products are affected by the Sportmix food recall:

  • Sportmix Energy Plus (44 and 50 pound bags)
  • Sportmix Premium High Energy (44 and 50 pound bags)
  • Sportmix Premium Puppy (16 and 33 pound bags)
  • Sportmix Bite Size (40 and 44 pound bags)
  • Sportmix Stamina (44 and 50 pound bags)
  • Sportmix Maintenance (44 and 50 pound bags)
  • Sportmix Original Cat (16 and 31 pound bags)
  • Splash Fat Cat 32% (50 pound bag)
  • Pro Pac Performance Puppy (40 pound bag)
  • Pro Pac Adult Mini Chunk (40 pound bag)
  • Nunn Better Maintenance (50 pound bag)

To get a better idea of the ingredients of what your dog is eating, its a good idea to carefully inspect the dog food label if possible before buying.

Midwestern Pet Foods brands, including Sportmix, can be found at a variety of animal supply stores including Tractor Supply and Chewy.
