LONDON, ENGLAND – DECEMBER 28: Rose, a three-year-old Rottweiler puppy, who is looking for a new home, sits for a portrait at Battersea Dogs and Cat’s Home on December 28, 2016 in London, England. Rose was brought in to Battersea after her owners, who bought her off the internet, found out they were not allowed to keep pets in their house. According to the charity, “She’s a bundle of energy and love. She’s full of beans and needs new owners who can help teach her the ways of the world. She’s a great puppy, looking for a home with people with guarding breed experience and can help her mature in to the lovely lady we know she can be”. Battersea Dog’s and Cats Home was founded 150 years ago and has rescued, reunited and rehomed over three million dogs and cats. The average stay for a dog is just 28 days although some stay much longer. Around 550 dogs and 200 cats are provided refuge by Battersea at any given time. (Photo by Dan Kitwood/Getty Images)

Big and loud are the next entries in the most popular dog breeds of 2019.

No. 8 – Rottweiler

Group: Working Group

2018 rank – No. 8

2019 British rank – No. 20

The Rottweiler wouldn’t come to mind as a candidate for No. 8, but they tend to be guard dogs, though they can also make terrific family pets and companions for children, if they’re trained well. As Kuno the Servicerottie demonstrates on Dog Twitter, they can also make very good service dogs as well.

The gentleness of Rottweilers also comes up in Bill Wallace’s Upchuck and the Rotten Willy books through Willy’s friendship with his cat friend Chuck.

No. 7 – Beagle

Group: Hound Group

2018 rank – No. 6

2019 British rank – Outside Top 10

Beagles are amazing, and Wesley’s favorite breed. They’re also quite stubborn and can get bored easily, so they’re not for everyone (though honestly this is true of all breeds). They’re traditionally a hunting breed who can do a little of everything.

In pop cultural appearances, Brain steals the show in the Inspector Gadget movies, and there are also the Phyllis Reynolds Naylor Shiloh series of novels and books as well.
