Hilary Duff and her family have a new puppy.
Here at Dog O’Day, we learned of this news over the weekend through iHeartDogs.
Duff posted the news on her Instagram story, as she and husband Matthew Koma picked up the female puppy in Harleysville, Pennsylvania, which is a Philadelphia suburb.
The puppy doesn’t seem to have a name yet, but she is a St Bernard, so presumably she will grow up to be a terrific guardian of her kids, since as a Working Group breed that’s part of what St Bernards were bred to do.
Hilary Duff is well known as an actress for the title role in the early-2000s Disney Channel series Lizzie McGuire, and she also starred in movies like Agent Cody Banks, A Cinderella Story, Cadet Kelly and The Perfect Man., in addition to the TV Land original series Younger, with additional appearances in things like the Steve Martin movies (as a sibling of Piper Perabo, Smallville’s Tom Welling and fellow Disney Channel star Alyson Stoner) and Law and Order: Special Victims Unit.
Though Lizzie didn’t have a dog of her own on the series, a stray dog had a litter of puppies underneath the back deck (2.11, “Over the Hill”), and one of her dreams of adulthood was to become a breeder of Golden Retrievers. In Cheaper by the Dozen, the family dog Gunner has a memorable role in a prank played on Perabo’s boyfriend (Ashton Kutcher).
She also has been active as a pop musician, releasing four albums to date: Metamorphosis (2003), Hilary Duff (2004), Dignity (2007) and Breathe In, Breathe Out (2015), with the Christmas music album Santa Claus Lane in 2002.
Duff was also a contributor to the coffee table book A Letter to My Dog, writing to her Bernese Mountain Dog/Australian Shepherd mix DuBois, and she has a long history of dog rescue and dog ownership; as two of her other current pups (Momo and Lucy) came from SoCal-based Love Leo Rescue.
