How did canine schools do during 2020 Week 12 in college football?

2020 Week 12 saw many canine schools not playing in the college football world due to COVID, but a lot of others did get to take the field. For those that could, their fans among the football dogs of the world made sure to cheer on their teams.

For our purposes, 2020 Week 12 began on Wednesday, November 18, as Mission’s Northern Illinois Huskies fell to the Ball State Cardinals 31-25 in a MAC matchup, NIU is now 0-3 on the season.

In the Sun Belt, the Arkansas State Red Wolves were stunned late by the Texas State Bobcats 47-45, dropping to 3-5 overall and 1-5 in conference play.

In the SEC, Smokey the Coonhound’s Tennessee Volunteers faced the No. 23 Auburn Tigers, falling 30-17. Auburn is now 5-2 going into the Iron Bowl next weekend, while Tennessee falls to 2-5.

Uga’s No. 13 Georgia Bulldogs hosted Bully’s Bulldogs from Mississippi State, with Uga remaining the alpha dog after the 31-24 victory. Georgia is now 5-2, while Mississippi State is 2-5. UGA was wearing special black alternate jerseys with a spiked-collar design around the neck, which was a better idea in theory than worked out in practice.

In the ACC, the North Carolina State Wolfpack barely squeaked out a win over the No. 21 Liberty Flames 15-14 in a nonconference matchup. NC State is now 6-3 overall and 5-3 in conference.

In the Mountain West, the New Mexico Lobos were grounded by the Air Force Falcons to the tune of 28-0, New Mexico is still searching for their first win at 0-4.

In a nationally-televised contest, the Nevada Wolf Pack hosted the San Diego State Aztecs, staying unbeaten at a league-leading 5-0 with the 26-21 victory.

The Boise State Broncos, who have a tee-retrieval dog at their home games, were trailing to the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors 3-0 as this story was being written.

In the Pac-12, Dubs’ Washington Huskies seem primed to win over Arizona’s Wildcats, leading 44-20 with four minutes left as of press time. They would move to 2-0.

Moving onto how the vet schools with non-canine mascots did during 2020 Week 12…

On Friday, November 20 in the Big Ten, a vet school battle between Purdue and Minnesota saw the Gophers get the better of the Boilermakers 34-31. Minnesota is now 2-3, while Purdue dropped to 2-2.

On Saturday, the Illinois Fighting Illini earned their second win of the season with the 41-23 triumph over the Nebraska Cornhuskers, as Illinois is now 2-3.

The No. 10 Wisconsin Badgers were halted 17-7 on ABC by the No. 19 Northwestern Wildcats, Wisconsin is now 2-1.

In the morning Fox matchup, the No. 3 Ohio State Buckeyes overcame the No. 9 Indiana Hoosiers 42-35 to remain unbeaten at 4-0 as the conference leaders.

In the SEC, the Missouri Tigers defeated the South Carolina Gamecocks 17-10 in the Clash of the Columbias (this isn’t a real thing, we just made it up).. Missouri is now 3-3.

The LSU Tigers, meanwhile, got back onto the right track with a 27-24 win in a rivalry game with the Arkansas Razorbacks to improve to 3-3.

Holland the Pup‘s No. 6 Florida Gators cruised to a win against the Vanderbilt Commodores 38-17, Florida is now 6-1.

In the ACC, Rookie the Batdog‘s Virginia Tech Hokies were clobbered by the Pitt Panthers 47-14, dropping to 4-5 overall, 4-4 in conference play.

In the Big 12, the No. 15 Iowa State Cyclones had no trouble with fellow vet school Kansas State, dispatching the Wildcats 45-0. Iowa State is now 6-2, 6-1, while Kansas State is 4-4, 4-3.

Finally, the No. 14 Oklahoma State Cowboys predictably lost in a Bedlam clash (because that’s what they do, especially when having high hopes prior to kickoff) to the No. 18 Oklahoma Sooners 41-13. OK State is now 5-2, 4-2, and tied for third in the conference.
