2020 Week 7 was a ruff one for many canine schools.

2020 Week 7 was a ruff one for many canine schools in the college football world as far as results went.

To begin with, many games were postponed due to COVID concerns, including the No. 7 Oklahoma State Cowboys’ game at the Baylor Bears, and the LSU Tigers’ game at Holland the Pup‘s No. 10 Florida Gators. That meant that three vet schools were unable to play right off the bat, and then most of the schools using canine mascots didn’t fare so well on the field.

Still, as always, the football dogs among the dogs of Instagram were still cheering on their favorite teams from the comfort of the couch or the kitchen, and wearing the appropriate collar, T-shirt or bandanna to mark the occasion.

For our purposes, 2020 Week7 began on Thursday, October 15, in the Sun Belt Conference, as the Arkansas State Red Wolves survived a wild contest with the Georgia State Panthers, prevailing 59-52 to improve to 3-2, 1-1 for the season.

On Saturday, October 17, all eyes were on Uga’s No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs as they faced the No. 2 Alabama Crimson Tide in a primetime CBS matchup. Unfortunately, Nick Saban’s squad proved too powerful to overcome, as the Tide rolled to a 41-24 victory. Georgia drops to 3-1 on the season, as the SEC is only playing conference games.

Reveille the Collie‘s No. 11 Texas A&M Aggies traveled to Starkville to play Bully’s Mississippi State Bulldogs in a battle of maroon and white-clad teams (the only thing it needed was Dr Pepper sponsorship). The Aggies proved victorious, winning 28-14, as they improve to 3-1 while Mississippi State fell to 1-3.

Smokey the Coonhound’s No. 18 Tennessee Volunteers were clobbered by the visiting Kentucky Wildcats 34-7, dropping to 2-2 on the season.

In the ACC, the North Carolina State Wolfpack hosted the Duke Blue Devils, triumphing 31-20. NC State is now 4-1 in conference and overall, while Duke falls to 1-5 in conference and overall.

Finally, in Conference USA, the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs welcomed the Marshall Thundering Herd to town, only to be stampeded 35-17. Louisiana Tech is now 3-2 overall and 2-1 in C-USA play.

Now onto the vet schools who played this weekend. As mentioned, many did not get a chance to play in 2020 Week 7, either by design or pandemic postponement.

In the SEC, the No. 15 Auburn Tigers were pupset by the South Carolina Gamecocks 30-22, falling to 2-2.

In the ACC, Rookie the Batdog‘s No. 23 Virginia Tech Hokies crushed the visiting Boston College Eagles 40-14, improving to 3-1, both overall and in conference.

2020 Week 8 will see the return of the Big Ten Conference will an abbreviated all-conference schedule, so while none of them use canine mascots, that is a lot of vet schools to follow, and the Mountain West is also starting up, so that’s a few canine mascots as well. Elsewhere in the college football landscape, we’ll be keeping an eye on Iowa State-Oklahoma State.
