The 2020 Emmys were somewhat lacking in canine-related content.

The 2020 Emmys were rather lacking in canine-related or canine-adjacent content, unfortunately. However, since we have a threefold methodology here at Dog O’Day for determining what makes a dog movie, it still applies for TV, though a little more of a stretch.

The rules, if you’re curious, are that:

  • 1 – It must be about a dog or another canine (foxes, wolves, etc)
  • 2 – It must have a dog or another canine that plays an important role in the story (New York Minute would count here, since the Chinese Crested Dog eats the flashdrive)
  • 3 – It must have a dog or another canine have a significant portion of screen time

The Netflix documentary series Cheer, which follows the competitive cheer team of Navarro College, counts because Navarro is one of the NJCAA canine schools, as their mascot is the Bulldogs.

Cheer was nominated in the Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Nonfiction or a Reality Program, Outstanding Sound Editing for a Nonfiction or a Reality Program, Outstanding Cinematography for a Reality Program categories.

Cheer also won the 2020 Emmys for Outstanding Directing for a Reality Program, Outstanding Picture Editing for an Unstructured Reality Program and Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program.

The Good Place, an NBC sitcom that is part of the Officeverse, also pulled in several 2020 Emmys nominations in its final chance to score awards there, as Ted Danson earned a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series as Michael, D’Arcy Carden and Maya Rudolph were both nominated as Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for their roles as Janet and Judge Gen, and William Jackson Harper was nominated as Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his role as Chidi.

The Good Place itself doesn’t actually have many dogs in it, which is strange for a heaven that was essentially designed by Parks and Rec‘s Leslie Knope, but dogs (or the love of them) pop up in several key situations throughout the series.

The show itself is also nominated for the 2020 Emmys for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series and Outstanding Comedy Series.

Amazon Prime’s The Marvelous Mrs Maisel was one of the night’s big winners, with four 2020 Emmys wins and an additional 16 nominations across various categories. Star Rachel Brosnahan’s dogs were in on the Zoom call to accept the award, which is neat.

Queer Eye has several cast members with dogs and have done several dogcentric episodes, and it garnered Outstanding Structured Reality Program for 2020 and an additional six nominations.

The 2020 Emmys telecast was hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, host of ABC’s late night show  Jimmy Kimmel Live.
