The One and Only Ivan trailer dropped ahead of the movie’s release next month.
The first One and Only Ivan trailer dropped online ahead of the movie’s release on Disney Plus on Friday, August 14.
Based on Kathryn Applegate’s (Animorphs, WIshtree) Newbery Medal-winning 2012 novel of the same name, it follows a captive gorilla as he tries to find his baby elephant friend Ruby a new home in a zoo.
Why would Dog O’Day cover a trailer for a movie about a gorilla? In the first place, because it’s a fantastic, achingly sad novel. In the second place, Ivan has a best friend in a tiny stray dog named Bob, who really should be voiced by David Spade.
While Spade unfortunately does not provide Bob’s voice, Danny DeVito (Romancing the Stone, Batman Returns, Space Jam) does, and he’s also a good choice. Helen Mirren (Inkheart, Red, Monsters University) voices another member of the circus entourage, an elderly Poodle named Snickers.
The trailer looks like it will be very faithful to the novel, though Ivan and Ruby don’t crash through the mall’s doors during an escape attempt. An interesting touch is that baby Ivan, Mack and Mack’s wife are seen in a flashback at a drive-in movie showing Robin Hood, which will soon be remade in live-action for Disney Plus.
Ivan’s voice comes from Sam Rockwell (Galaxy Quest, Iron Man 2), while older elephant Stella is voiced by Angelina Jolie (Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Mr and Mrs Smith, Maleficent). Ruby’s voice is done by Brooklyn Prince of The Florida Project.
In human roles, Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) will play Ivan’s owner Mack, Ariana Greenblatt (Stuck in the Middle) plays a girl named Julia who encourages Ivan’s artistic talents, and Ramon Rodriguez (The Wire) as Julia’s father George.
