And finally, the list of Washington Redskins nickname suggestions ends with…

Terriers

Why it works:

This is a little generic, sure, but Terriers in general are stubborn and resilient, and can hold their own in a fight if they have to. They’re convinced they can take on the world if the need arises, and on the field or in the office, isn’t that the sort of spirit you want to promote in your organization if you’re a football team?

Terriers are the nickname of the college sports teams from Boston University and Wofford, so in a way would tie into the team’s beginnings as the Boston Braves in 1932, especially if they went with a Boston Terrier as the logo or mascot.

It would be basically uncharted waters in the pro sports landscape as well, since the only professional major league team to use the nickname were the St Louis Terriers of baseball’s short-lived Federal League, which lasted three seasons from 1913 to 1915 and whose legacy is giving the Chicago Cubs Wrigley Field after the Chicago Whales vacated the stadium.

The alliterative sound of “Washington Terriers” is also pleasant, especially when said by announcers during radio broadcasts.

Also, a fantastic logo idea would be a determined-looking cartoon Airedale doing the Heisman pose in a leather helmet that allowed his ears to poke through. Plus, since terriers are “earth dogs.” the team could keep their base color of maroon, or could switch things up by going to a primarily- brown color scheme while retaining the yellow-gold they currently have.

Why it doesn’t work:

There are two main types of terriers: the digging kind that gave the type their name, and the strong, muscular pit bull kind. Given that most people are afraid of pit bulls, that might not be the best route to take.

And also, “Terriers” does not sound terrifying at all. More “cute and goofy,” which doesn’t inspire confidence in the team’s on-field ability.\\
