A Frisbee-playing Lab named Apollo is overjoyed in a viral video posted earlier this week.

A Frisbee-playing Lab named Apollo is getting his 15 minutes of fame thanks to a video posted on his Instagram account earlier this week.

Dog O’Day learned of this video through PopSugar.

Apollo, a black Labrador Retriever, can be followed at the handle @Apollo_BlackLab, which is very straightforward and to the point.

“SO EXCITED TO PLAY FRISBEE AGAIN WOW KANGAROO HOPS AND TIPPY TAPS,” the caption read.

Unfortunately for Apollo (and for viewers who were hoping to see him in action), the Frisbee doesn’t actually get thrown in this video, but we bet he was able to chase after a lot of throws once the camera stopped recording.

While playing fetch with a ball can be fun (see our guide to learn how to teach a dog to play), the unpredictability of a disc can make for more gratifying chases and catches at times, since they’re both harder to throw properly and more difficult to catch.

For humans, if you’ve ever skipped a rock in a pond, lake or ocean, that’s the same wrist-snap motion for an quick and accurate backhand throw. (The terms backhand and forehand are flipped, since a typical throw involves a sweeping motion across the body with your wrist facing outward towards the target.)

There are several organizations to choose from when it comes to competitively playing disc dog, which is the competitive name for the sport, as Frisbee is a trademark. (It’s also sometimes called “freestyle flying disc.”) But as of October 2019, the American Kennel Club started recognizing titles from UpDog Challenge, making them the leader.

Disc dog has been a hallmark of the Purina Pro Plan Incredible Dog Challenge since the competition’s beginning in the late 1990s.

Labrador Retrievers are currently the most popular British dogs, and have been the reigning champion among American dog breeds for about three lifetimes of canines.
