Bon Jovi’s new single “Unbroken” is a fundraiser for the Patriotic Service Dog Foundation, which provides service dogs to veterans and first responders.
All proceeds from the song’s downloads will go towards the cause.
Written for the documentary To Be of Service, which follows veterans with PTSD, the rock band announced this news on their official Twitter page.
Dog O’Day learned of this news though Rolling Stone.
“Unbroken,” which shares the title of Laura Hillenbrand’s amazing biography of Olympian and World War II veteran Louis Zamperini, will likely be included on the upcoming album 2020, which lead singer Jon Bon Jovi described to Extra as a “very socially conscious” record.
“Unbroken” is hard-hitting in its lyrics, depicting the trials and travails soldiers on deployment face, and the suicide epidemic often faced by veterans who feel that society doesn’t or can’t understand them.
The music video intersperses Jon Bon Jovi playing an acoustic-electric Fender guitar in an abandoned building with footage Uncle Sam’s “I want you!” propaganda posters, scenes of basic training and life out in the Middle Eastern desert.
The aid provided by service dogs is also highlighted in both the lyrics and visually, while the song is presented in first-person from a soldier’s perspective.
Bon Jovi was formed in New Jersey in 1983 after a sample demo of their song “Runaway” began to get airplay around various New York City radio stations.
They have released 14 albums to date: 1984’s Bon Jovi, 1985’s 7800 Degrees Fahrenheit, their most famous, from 1986, Slippery When Wet; New Jersey from 1988, Keep the Faith from 1992, 1995’s These Days, 2000’s Crush, 2002’s Bounce, 2005’s Have a Nice Day, a country-tinged 2007 album in Lost Highway, 2009’s The Circle, 2013’s What About Now, 2015’s Burning Bridges and 2016’s This House is Not for Sale.
Wesley thinks that Slippery When Wet, Crush and Have a Nice Day are their best albums overall, though Lost Highway had one of their underrated songs in “Who Says You Can’t Go Home?”, a duet with Jennifer Nettles of the country duo Sugarland.
In our opinion, this is a really cool way to use celebrity status to give back to a deserving cause.
