Fallout 4 now lets players pet dogs in the game.

All dogs are good and they all need pets. This is a basic law of how the world works for pet lovers and humans in general, and the video game Fallout 4 now lets players do just that.

Fallout 4 was released in November 2015 for PCs, the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox One, and is set in a post-apocalyptic Boston in the year 2287.

Dog O’Day learned of this news through Kotaku, which is part of the Gawker Media network along with sites like The AV Club, Deadspin, Gizmodo, Jalopnik, LifeHacker and The Onion.

This mod was created by the gamer Sagittarius22, and while it’s not the first modification to let players pet specific dogs, it’s the first to allow players to give the numerous NPC (non player controlled) dogs the attention they need.

NPC characters are basically the video game equivalent of extras in movies or TV shows, and there’s a lot of them in Fallout 4.

Your character’s loyal German Shepherd, called by the uncreative name of Dogmeat, is a constant companion, and was the only dog you could pet before Sagittarious22 stepped in.

According to Kotaku, there are a few requirements and stipulations necessary before gamers try this at home: They must have reached the first rank of the Animal Friend perk, and you can’t pet a dog while wearing power armor or while holding any weapons.

This makes sense, because if you have a weapon on the ready, your guard will be up, and the dog would perceive you as a threat.

It is currently unclear if modding video games is a violation of copyright or an art form more akin to fanfiction, though the practice has been around for nearly as long as video games themselves have, and remains highly popular among those with coding skills.

While we aren’t big gamers here, we think that all dogs ought to be petted, even if they are virtual, so this seems like a good addition to a game that sounds fascinating to play.
