Milo Ventimiglia says that The Art of Racing in the Rain will be Kleenex-worthy.

Milo Ventimiglia, who stars in the upcoming film The Art of Racing in the Rain, says that it will be a real tearjerker.

Ventimiglia, known for playing recurring character Jess Mariano in Gilmore Girls, family patriarch Jack Pearson in This is Us, and Rocky Balboa’s son Robert in the latest Rocky movies, plays Denny Swift, an aspiring sports car driver in Seattle who owns a Golden Retriever named Enzo, named after the founder of Ferrari.

Enzo is voiced by Kevin Costner (Bull Durham, Field of Dreams, Dances With Wolves), who was a black-and-brown mutt in Garth Stein’s 2008 novel of the same name (read our review here).

It also stars Amanda Seyfried (Mean Girls, Mamma Mia, Letters to Juliet) as Denny’s wife Eve, which was perfect casting in our opinion.

Ryan Kiera Anderson (Anne With An E) and Lily Dodsworth-Evans (Poldark) share the role of Denny and Eve’s daughter Zoe.

Kathy Bates (Edward Scissorhands, 13 Going On 30) and Martin Donovan (Weeds, Ant-Man) play Eve’s nasty parents.

As the actor told the magazine Us Weekly, viewers will definitely need Kleenexes afterwards.

“What I loved about Art of Racing was that it had a feeling of hope. It had this magical quality to it, where, there are things that happen in life but it doesn’t bring us down, it actually lifts it up,” Ventimiglia said.

“That’s what I loved about the message of the movie that was carried over from the book. It was hopeful.”

While the novel is very serious, it does end on an uplifting note, and from Ventimiglia’s comments, it seems like that was carried over in the adaptation.
