Once upon a time, there was a dog that was dumped on the side of the road. Now, that dog has become an instant celebrity. Meet Tuna the dog.

Tuna the Dog was once abandoned on the side of a road in San Diego, California, left to fend for himself.

Today, the Chihuahua/Dachshund mix has become an instant sensation.

The story of Tuna the Dog, one of how an act of cruelty turned into a story of success, is one that should be told, not just to highlight how terrible and inhumane animal cruelty can be, but also how one person who cared turned his life around.

Tuna’s fate can easily apply to us humans as well. While most of us plow through life with a smile, for some of us that smile can be a cover for abuse and neglect.

Tuna the Dog was left on the side of a road in San Diego, by a rescuer no less. After he was dumped on the side of the road, Tuna (then known as “Wormy”) crawled on his belly, as sad of a scene as one would ever imagine.

Fortunately for Tuna, he was found by another rescuer, one that actually had cared for the dog. According to the Huffington Post and Dogster Magazine, she took Tuna to a farmer’s market to search for someone to adopt him, and she found one in Courtney Dasher.

Dasher fell in love with him instantly, and soon after, she created an Instagram account for Tuna (he can be followed at @tunameltsmyheart), and he became an instant celebrity. He’s now one of the most popular dogs in the world, and his status has helped raise money for animal rescue groups all over.

Oh, and as for his Instagram account, Tuna now has over two million followers, bringing joy to those who may need a little afternoon pick-me-up.
