The first trailer for The Art of Racing in the Rain movie dropped earlier this week.

The first trailer for The Art of Racing in the Rain movie, based on the novel of the same name by Garth Stein, dropped earlier this week, and it looks very promising.

Nearly all of the dialogue, if not the entirety, came from the book, which is narrated in first person by an elderly dog named Enzo about his life with his family – sports car racer Denny Swift, his wife Eve and their daughter Zoe.

Milo Ventimiglia (Gilmore Girls, Heroes, This Is Us) plays Denny, Amanda Seyfried (Mean Girls, Mamma Mia, Letters to Juliet) plays Eve, and Kevin Costner (Field of Dreams, Dances With Wolves, Swing Vote) is the voice of Enzo.

This seems like perfect casting in our opinion, though we do have one minor quibble – Enzo is described in the book as a black and tan Labrador/Poodle/Airedale mix, though in the movie (and the cover of our copy of the novel) he is pictured as a Golden Retriever.

Also, it looks like Eve’s job has been changed from a marketing/sales career in middle management at a clothing store to an instructor at a university.

“The best drivers don’t focus on the future or the past, but only on the present,” Enzo says. Dogs excel at living in the present.

The trailer promises an emotional journey with plenty of exciting on-track racing action. Partrick Dempsey (Sweet Home Alabama, Enchanted, Grey’s Anatomy) serves as a producer, which is fitting, as he has much experience in professional sports car racing. Rallycross racer and nine-time X Games medalist Tanner Foust (IThe Dukes of Hazzard, Iron Man 2) was part of the stunt driving crew.

The Art of Racing in the Rain releases to theaters on Friday, August 9.
