Naming a new dog can be one of the more fun aspects of introducing a new pet into the family. And thanks to Harry Potter we have plenty of inspiration.

When it comes to finding the perfect name for a dog, we often look for inspiration in a number of places, such as baby name books, our favorite foods, and even pop culture. And one of the most popular sources of inspiration has to be Harry Potter.

Ever since the books and then the movies were released, people seem to have fallen under the spell of J.K. Rowling’s series (which we totally understand). And because of this, more and more people have turned to the books and movies to get inspiration when it comes to finding the perfect name. In fact, I personally know of people who have named their pups after characters like Hagrid, Luna, and Neville among others.

Even Business Insider has acknowledged that the Harry Potter series is the ultimate pop culture option for dog name inspiration with Luna topping the list. There are any number of inspirations from the series and here are some of our favorites.

Luna – With Luna topping many of the dog name lists we have to start with this one. It really is a perfect pet name and her spacey demeanor could be a great description for any pup.

Sirius – Considering Sirius Black was not only a significant character in the series, but also a black dog, we think Sirius is a great name for a truly serious pup. And if your dog happens to be black, then it really is a no brainer.

Charity – In the series, Charity Burbage was a professor of Muggle studies while Harry Potter and his friends were in school. The name Charity would be a cute girl’s name for a sweet pup, whether big or small.

Penelope – At one point in the series, Penelope Clearwater is Percy Weasley’s girlfriend, and I personally love this name for a dog. In fact, growing up my family had a fluffy Chow Chow named Penelope and she was as prissy as the name implies (at least in terms of a dog’s name).

Fleur – Naming a pup flower is so passe, so we like the idea of Fleur. And the fact that you can take the inspiration of Fleur Delacour, who married Bill Weasley, means that you are still using the Harry Potter series to come up with the perfect pup name.

Hermione – I feel like no explanation is needed here. Hermione is one of the toughest characters in the series and would be the perfect name for a fierce and independent pup. In fact, I think a golden retriever, pit bull, or even a Labrador retriever would be the perfect pup to grace with the name.

Hagrid – Honestly, having met someone who named their dog Hagrid means that this simply has to make the list. This is especially true if you have a dog with lots of hair that seems wild but yet your pup is a gentle giant (who else is thinking of a Saint Bernard at this moment).

Newt – Although we aren’t digging into the Fantastic Beasts spin-off series, Newt Scamander was mentioned in the original series as well. And we love the idea of naming a smaller dog like a Dachshund or Pomeranian Newt.

Fluffy – It might seem like a random pet name, but Fluffy is also the name of Hagrid’s three-headed dog. As the protector of the Philosopher’s Stone, we think the irony of this name is enough that we think it would be perfect for a fierce pup.

Hedwig – Hedwig might have been Harry Potter’s owl, but we still think it is a great name for a dog. He really was a trusty sidekick, and so are our pups.
