Military Working Dogs are being honored for the first time by the United States Postal Service. New forever stamps releasing in 2019 feature four breeds of Military dogs.

On January 29, the United States Postal Service (USPS) issued a statement regarding changes to the 2019 stamp program, as well as the new designs that would be gracing Forever Stamps this year. And while there were plenty of newsworthy stamp designs, the one we are particularly impressed with features Military Working Dogs.

According to the USPS, a new booklet of 20 stamps will feature four different breeds of the Military Working Dogs. The German shepherd, the Dutch shepherd, the Belgian Malinois, and the Labrador retriever will each get their own stamp, with the shepherds appearing on a blue background stamp, while the other two working dogs will be on red backgrounds. Each of the stamps will also feature a portion of a white star, and hints of gold print as well.

These four breeds are the most commonly used dogs in the military, which is why they are getting center stage on stamps that many people still use every day.And while it is quite clear which breed of dog is on each stamp based on the look of the dog, as well as a caption listing the breed, there is still a very artistic approach to design. Each dog is drawn in a way that gives it an abstract feel, without actually being abstract.

The design is said to be a representation of both patriotism and the American flag, which makes perfect sense both in terms of the color scheme and the subject matter. And I admit that just looking at these stamps made me feel a sense of pride and honor, as Military Working Dogs are just as brave, heroic, and hard-working as their human counterparts.

Greg Breeding, who is the art director for the USPS, worked with DKNG Studios to create the design and art for the stamps. And together, they truly crafted a stamp that is worthy of these four-legged heroes.

While this statement did not reveal when we would see these stamps hitting our local postal counters, they did say that there would be more announcements in regards to first-day-of-issue ceremonies, release dates, and even where these stamps would be available for purchase. Although we don’t yet know when these Military Working Dogs will get the spotlight, it will definitely happen this year, which is definitely something we are looking forward to.

I am certainly happy to see the Post Office giving the spotlight to Military Working Dogs. These heroes deserve recognition for all they do, and certainly featuring them on the Forever stamp is one way to honor these brave pups.
