Hill’s canned dog food recalled for Vitamin D concerns

Hill’s Pet Nutrition voluntarily recalls canned dog food due to Vitamin D concerns.

If you feed your pet canned dog food, you might want to read this.

Hill’s Pet Nutrition issued a voluntary recall notice on many of its canned dog food varieties on January 31 for excessive Vitamin D levels.

While it’s an essential element for dogs to have, too much can cause loss of appetite, excessive thirst and weight loss, and in some cases can induce kidney failure.

“Our investigation confirmed elevated levels of vitamin D due to a supplier error,” the company website stated, and they will be testing incoming ingredients more thoroughly in the future.

Hill’s, headquartered in Topeka, Kansas, is the company behind brands like Healthy Advantage, Ideal Balance and Science Diet.

The company stressed that the recall only affected canned dog food, and that dry dog food, cat food and treats are all unaffected.

Affected varieties are as follows:

12.5 ounce cans of Prescription Diet c/d Multicare Canine Chicken and Vegetable Stew and i/d Canine Chicken and Vegetable Stew.

5.5 ounce cans of Prescription Diet i/d Canine Chicken and Vegetable Stew, and z/d Canine.

13 ounce cans of Prescription Diet g/d Canine, i/d Canine, j/d Canine, w/d Canine and z/d Canine.

12.5 ounce cans of Prescription Diet Metabolic + Mobility Canine Vegetable and Tuna Stew, w/d Canine Vegetable and Chicken Stew, i/d Low-Fat Canine Rice, Vegetables and Chicken Stew, and Derm Defense Canine Chicken and Vegetable Stew.

5.8 ounce cans of Science Diet Adult 7+ Small and Toy Breed Chicken and Barley Entree.

12.5 ounce cans of Science Diet Adult 7+ Healthy Cuisine Braised Beef, Carrots and Peas Stew and Adult 7+ Youthful Vitality Chicken and Vegetable Stew.

13 ounce cans of Science Diet Puppy Chicken and Barley Entree, Adult Chicken and Barley Entree, Adult Turkey and Barley, Adult Chicken and Beef Entree, Adult Light with Liver, Adult 7+ Chicken and Barley Entree, Adult 7+ Beef and Barley Entree, and Adult 7+ Turkey and Barley Entree.
