Are you looking to improve the overall health and happiness of your pup in the new year? If so, we have some ideas to make that resolution happen.

When it comes to our furry friends, we often treat them like our children. We want them to have all of the happiness and good health that they possibly can. And while there is definitely nothing wrong with that, we think there are ways we can improve on what we are already doing.

Our dogs are our family, and we want the very best for them. Although we often come up with personal resolutions for the new year, this time around, we think it may be time to come up with dog friendly resolutions. And for 2019, our goal is to make for a happier and healthier year for our dogs.

Improve their diet

Up first, we are recommending a better diet for our pups. While there are people who have reverted to raw diets and dog foods that are reminiscent of human food, we don’t think this is absolutely necessary. Of course, we do think raw diets can be a great way to improve a dog’s overall health, but that’s not the only way you can improve your pup’s diet.

Just like we need to pay attention to our caloric intake, but we should also be mindful of the calories our dogs are eating. And according to Dogster, there are ways to figure this out, including accurately measuring out dry food (or wet food), and paying attention to the nutritional labels.

Of course, it is also important to be careful of things like table scraps, treats, and any special foods you add to their diet. There are certain ingredients and food that our dogs should be avoiding, so these are things we should all be mindful of.

Car rides

If your pup is anything like ours, then riding in the car can be the epitome of happiness. However, it is important to remember car safety for our pups, just like we do with ourselves and our children.

In a piece from Outside, they went into detail about what it means to keep a dog safe in the car, including talking about ways to do this and things that can happen when we don’t secure our pup for a car ride. Among the most important takeaways from the piece, were these three things we should all know when it comes to car safety for our dogs: “preventing distractions, managing the dog’s deceleration rate upon impact, and keeping the dog restrained post-crash.”

Be a better owner overall

In general, the best way to improve the happiness and health of our pups is to be better owners. This means giving them attention and paying attention. Make sure that you are keeping you dog trained and working with them on good behavior. But, when there are accidents or mistakes, don’t lose your temper, and instead find ways to correct the problems.

Find ways to connect with your pup, whether they are still puppies or getting older. And as our pups age, we should be adjusting our own interactions with them in order to give them the quality of life they need and deserve. Pick up books about dog training or living with dogs and get new ideas for how you can improve your ownership.
