Canine college football roundup for Championship Saturday
Championship Saturday saw a mix of the predictable and unexpected in the college football world.
Championship Saturday mainly saw the conference title games, of course, though there were some makeup games played that were delayed by poor weather.
As always, our pups were cheering on their favorite teams (if they were playing) on the Noisy Box from the comfort of the living room.
Also as always, Dog O’Day will provide a recap of the canine-focused NCAA Division I football scores.
Northern Illinois mascot Mission was all set for the Marathon Mid-American Conference Championship Game in Detroit on Friday night.
Even better for him, the MAC West-winning Huskies improved to 8-5 on the season with their 30-29 victory over the Buffalo Bulls, the MAC East champs.
In the San Francisco area on Friday night, the Pac-12 Conference championship game was a low-scoring affair between the No. 17 Utah Utes, South Division champs, and the No. 11 Washington Huskies, winners of the North Division. Washington improved to 10-3 for the year with the 10-3 victory.
Riley and Chloe the Whippets were cheering on their No. 4 East champs Georgia Bulldogs as they faced the No. 1 West winners Alabama Crimson Tide in the Southeastern Conference title game, in a rematch of last season’s SEC title game and the National Championship Game.
The Bulldogs outplayed the Crimson Tide for much of the game, but Bama scored the game-winning touchdown with just over a minute left to stay undefeated.
Vivian the Lhasa Apso cheered on her No. 5 Oklahoma Sooners, who came back to defeat the No. 14 Texas Longhorns in a Red River rematch in the Dr Pepper Big 12 Championship Game. The Sooners won 39-27, and Vivian showed her reindeer toy who was in charge.
This four-legged Ohio State football fan was pretty happy with the way the No. 6 Buckeyes handled the No. 21 Northwestern Wildcats in the Big Ten Championship Game presented by Discover, with Ohio State winning 45-24.
Franklin the Poodle wishes footballs came in smaller sizes, which is understandable. Also understandable is his glee at the No. 2 Clemson Tigers winning the catfight that was the Dr Pepper Atlantic Coast Conference Championship Game, with Clemson victorious by a 42-10 score in the pouring Charlotte rain over the Pittsburgh Panthers.
No. 25 Fresno State won over No. 21 Boise State on the Broncos’ home turf in the Mountain West Conference title game, the Bulldogs coming out on top 19-16.
In a nonconference makeup game, North Carolina State bowled over East Carolina, as the Wolfpack ran away with the 58-3 win, improving to 9-3 for the season.
Also, the Drake Bulldogs fell in a close one to the No. 23 Iowa State Cyclones, 27-24.
