Petco is urging its customers to donate to their local animal shelter this holiday season.

The Christmas-to-New Year’s season is a time for commercials to advocate expensive, out-of-the-ordinary purchases (seriously, cars?) and sappy-sweet messages drench everything. But Petco is thinking a little outside the box this year with their holiday ad campaign.

“Our pets are increasingly becoming members of our family. But despite providing us with unconditional love and companionship all year-round, many pet parents forget to include them in holiday festivities,” Petco Chief Marketing Officer Tariq Hassan stated in a press release.

“We’re proud to celebrate the ‘power of giving’ by shining a light on the millions of pets still in search of a loving family to establish the kind of special bond the hero in our campaign discovers,” Hassan continued.

The highlight of the campaign, called “Holiday Tails,” is the 90-second spot titled “Saving Up.”

Done in a traditional stop-motion style similar to the Rankin-Bass specials of the 1960s, a boy is saving up for a new bike, but when he gets it for Christmas, decides to spend the money on toys for a three-legged dog at the local shelter. Eventually he takes apart his new bike to build a kind of wheelchair so it’s easier for the pup to get around.

From now until Christmas Eve, Petco stores across the country are accepting donations of toys, wet and dry dog and cat food, and litter.

There are several ways to donate to the Petco Foundation during this time; by donating at the checkout along with your regular purchases, or by buying a 2019 Petco Foundation calendar or a reusable tote bag, with all proceeds going to help the animals who could use a little help.

Petco is also hosting their annual “Photos with Santa” event in stores on the Saturdays of Dec. 8 and Dec. 15. All proceeds from that event will also be funneled to local animal welfare organizations through the Petco Foundation.

Cyber Week deals haven’t quite ended yet, either, so you may as well look to see if you or a friend might need anything present-wise.
