If you have seen the new heist drama, Widows, then you know that the dog was actually a big part of the story. And it turns out at least one cast member was in love with their little co-star.

Have you seen the new dramatic heist movie Widows? If not, you may not want to read this until you have (spoiler alert). But, if you have then we have to talk about the dog!

While the focus of Widows was on the ladies at the heart of the movie, Veronica (played by Viola Davis) spent a large portion of the film basically clinging to her dog, a West Highland white terrier. The little terrier even has some solid moments in the movie that were important to the actual story line. So of course we were all on the edge of our seats hoping nothing happened to the dog.

And guess what? We were apparently not alone. It turns out that even a member of the cast was a fan of their little co-star.

In an interview with Vulture, both Steve McQueen, the director and co-writer for the movie, and Davis, opened up about the terrier and its part in the film. McQueen explained that, “I love dogs, and obviously, it was a comfort, it was a joy, and she [Veronica] loved her dog.” And of course dogs are part of people’s lives, so it makes sense to see one being a part of the story in some way.

With everything that Veronica was going through, the dog was more than just a source of comfort, it was literally all she had left. This dog was all she had of her family after everything that happened, and so the terrier was a major part of her character.

According to Viola Davis, “the only thing [Veronica] really has left to fill up her life, to love her, and someone that she can give love to is Olivia. That’s why I held the dog like a baby.”

The thing is that while the dog may have been important to the story line in Widows, that doesn’t mean there wasn’t some resistance early on. Davis doesn’t own a dog herself, and was worried about working with the terrier. It turns out that dogs really are able to make everyone love them. The actress revealed that within minutes of meeting her little co-star she was basically in love.

In talking about her reaction to the dog, Davis shared that, “within the first five minutes, I’m kissing the dog, I’m holding the dog, the dog was on my chest. I love that dog, and she came to me so easily.”

Honestly, we love knowing that we were not alone in loving the little dog. And of course with the tone of the movie, we were worried about her safety, and we bet we were not alone. However, we don’t think Steve McQueen or Viola Davis were going to let something happen to their furry co-star considering they were just as in love with the terrier as the rest of us.

And sure there are plenty of movies that are much more dog-centric than Widows, but really this one surprised us with just how important the dog really was. So if you are looking for a solid drama with a bit of dog love at its heart, then we have to throw this one out as an option.
