Retired military dogs are eligible for adoption after their service, and one artist is using their comics to tell the story of one adopted military dog.

There are plenty of animals looking for their forever homes. Among those animals are working dogs such as military working dogs (MWD) and contractor working dogs (CWD).

Often these dogs seem to be forgotten about by the general public, and while we know that these dogs exist, once they are no longer considered active duty, we tend to forget about them. Luckily for these animals, there are organizations such as Mission K9 Rescue, which help to not only find these dogs new homes, but also rehabilitate and repair them.

But while there are organizations out there to support retired military dogs, they still never seem to get the attention they need.

One artist is ready to change that through comics.

On Instagram, the artist known as Pet Foolery has been sharing comics starring a retired military dog named Brutus and his new sibling, Pixie the cat. The comics of Pixie and Brutus started in September 2018, with the introduction of the two animals, and as of this writing they have starred in seven posts.

In the comics, Brutus is a scarred, larger than life, retired military dog, and his new sibling is a cute kitten named Pixie who is sweet, charming, and already completely in love with Brutus. Over the course of the comics, we watch as Brutus makes it clear that it is up to him to protect Pixie from the world. This includes destroying the TV when Pixie decides to watch A Nightmare on Elm Street and letting the local raccoon know who’s the boss now.

And while we have certainly loved all of the Pixie and Brutus comics (the Halloween costumes was a particular favorite), perhaps it is the one posted in honor of Veteran’s Day that really reminded us that Brutus is a retired military dog. When Pixie asks what MWD stands for and Brutus tries to explain the concept of war, it becomes clear that these comics are far more than mere entertainment. They serve as a reminder that there are real animals out there serving their country who needing loving homes when they retire.

Reading through the comics can be by turns humorous, fun, and sad. It is a reminder that while they may seem tough and strong, these animals still want love and the comfort of home.

Through Pet Foolery’s art, we get to see a side of an MWD that makes us realize that perhaps it is time to start paying more attention to rescues that cater to the working dogs who do so much for us. While these animals may not be for everyone, we should all consider ourselves lucky that they have offered up their lives in service to our country as well.
