Actress Amy Hargreaves loves her rescue dog Fred.

Fred is an eight-year-old black Lab mix adopted from a Puerto Rico shelter five years ago.

“We knew we wanted to adopt a dog,” Hargreaves told People magazine. “It was important for us to rescue a dog, since so many dogs don’t have homes.”

In addition to being the family’s first dog, Hargreaves jokingly refers to Fred as her “third child,”

Fred was the runt of a litter of 11 siblings, and the last to be adopted, in a process that took three years until he found his family.

He is super friendly to other dogs he meets, and while he loves tennis balls, like most Labs, in general he doesn’t really care much for toys, Hargreaves told People.

Fred is very mellow, but if a stranger comes to the door, he’ll bark ferociously, protecting his people.

Hargreaves is best known for her man role of lawyer Lainie Jensen in the Netflix drama 13 Reasons Why, the mother of protagonist Clay Jensen (Dylan Minnette). She is also known for appearing in the 2011-2019 Showtime spy drama Homeland in the recurring role of Maggie Mathison.

Hargreaves has also guest-starred in Blindspot, Blue Bloods, Elementary, Person of Interest and three different Law & Order series, playing four different characters over five episodes.

Whenever possible, she tries to bring Fred onto the set so he can hang out in her trailer or dressing room and keep her company.

“He enhances our lives so much, but never more so when you come in the door after a long day [of work] and he’s there wagging his tail, ready to greet you,” Hargreaves said.
